How To

Make Things

Happen For You

7 Steps to Make It Happen
By Kathy Gates, Professional Life Coach

Step 1. Identify it. The southern expression for that
is "Name it and Claim it". What do you really want?
Be specific. Not, "I want a job that will pay my
bills". Instead - "I want to work as a Store Manager
making $XXX per month." Also try to look past the
obvious goal, and connect to the feeling you are really
looking for. "I want to be able to feel safe with my
money, not just each month but for the future."
Sometimes you can let go of a specific goal and find
another way to get the same feeling.

Step 2: Visualize it: A lot of people poo-poo this
step, but visualizing (or fantasizing) has several
important elements. It helps you create a clear picture
of what you want. By fantasizing about it, your mind
has time to accept it, so it's easier when the actual
opportunity does come. Visualizing helps you work
out a plan, helps you ask questions, look at things
objectively and piece together a plan that will make
your goal work.

Step 3. Believe it: This goes hand in hand with
visualizing it, because as you visualize yourself
achieving the goal, you are better able to believe that
you can accomplish it. Your belief in your ability to
achieve a goal affects the choices you make, the effort
you put into it, and how you handle the inevitable
obstacles. Believing in yourself will take you a long
long way towards your goal.

Step 4. Practice it: Very few things come naturally
to us. If you sit around and wait on a great job, or a
cleaner house, or a more organized life to arrive
FedX, you'll be waiting a long time. Instead, you can
make it happen by practicing and preparing for what
you want. Want to ski downhill at 60 mph without
breaking your bones? Better practice! Want an
organized schedule? Better start practicing!

Step 5. Act as-if: This is part of the law of attraction.
You attract back to you what you put out there. The
Bible says, "as a man thinketh, so he is" Translation:
What you think, you do. You can spend all day
thinking about how pitiful things are. Or you can
decide to spend all day thinking what you can do
about it. Act as-if you had options. Act as-if you
care what your life is. Act as-if you can make it
happen.

Step 6. Ask for it: Sounds simple enough. Ask for
what you need to help you accomplish your goal.
Need support? Need ideas? Need an expert? Ask for
it. Ask nicely, ask concisely, but ask.

Step 7: Expect It: It's easy to forget how simply
saying "I always attract difficult men", "Nobody
wants to hire me", "I'll never have anything" creates
exactly that situation. You create a self fulfilling
prophecy and you tend to look for evidence to support
it and even behave in ways that causes the situation to
occur (example - overspending). Instead, expect the
best, expect and say "I can have nice things if (fill in
the blank". Be realistic, but expect that you can have
what you want in your life.
