Pregnancy Cravings

& Vitamins

Craving Is Okay, But Don’t Forget Pre-Natal Vitamins
Sara Jameson

It’s okay for pregnant woman craving. Cravings is some kind of
momentary desire for a particular food or flavor and often
times there is no rhyme or reason to why some women crave
certain things and others crave different things. Popular foods
that pregnant women have been known to crave include: sausage,
peanut butter, popcorn, potato chips, ice cream, pickles, M&Ms,
French fries and Mexican entrees. Of course, this short list is
nowhere near comprehensive!

Craving to some foods for pregnant women is naturally common,
but they still have to fulfill the balance substances for their
baby and their self. Pre-natal vitamins supplement during
pregnancy are important to the health of a growing baby and the
mother. The mother needed pre-natal vitamins supplement because
their bodies are going through so many changes.

As we might have known that today’s diets are often deficient
in vitamins. One deficiency that has been found is the lack of
enough folic acid, one of the B vitamins. That’s why to set up
vitamin deficiency all pregnant women should modified their
diet. It is easiest for your body to absorb nutrients from
foods, but since it can be difficult to take in enough of those
key vitamins and minerals during pregnancy, most doctors
recommend that you also take pre-natal supplements.

Pre-natal vitamins supplement contain several of ingredient
such as folic acid, which is the synthetic form of the
naturally occurring folate, which is taken in the first four
weeks of pregnancy. By so, it can reduce the risk of the baby
having an incomplete spinal column, or neural tube defect by up
to 70% which effect baby's development in the womb.

Folic acid is most useful very early in the pregnancy; most
doctors recommend that women trying to conceive begin
supplementing their diet with 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic
acid per day. Eating spinach and chicken liver are great
natural sources of folate which are recommended throughout
pregnancy. Folate is often added to breakfast cereals and
breads; this addition will be written on the nutrition label.

Another important substance in the pre-natal vitamins
supplement is calcium. This substance helps the baby develop
strong bones and teeth. Small amounts of vitamin D are
important for calcium absorption. The good news is that you can
absorb this vitamin through exposure to the sun. Most prenatal
supplements provide this vitamin. Calcium is found in yogurt,
milk, kale, etc.

Other substance is Iron. Iron is important for the baby's
development of red blood cells, which deliver oxygen to the
baby. Supplementing iron into your diet is mostly important for
the mother's health. Insufficient iron might lead to fatigue and
anemia. On the other hand, too much iron can hurt both the
mother and the baby. Be very careful with iron supplements!

Although you have taken pre-natal vitamins supplement, you
should never eat undercooked meats or eggs at anytime during
your pregnancy. Likewise, stay away from alcohol, cigarettes
and any other drugs (legal or otherwise). That said, you can
eat whatever sounds good to you—pizza, hamburgers, bacon, etc.
You will have cravings for a variety of foods—some days, you
will have to have pepperoni pizza and other days, bagels and
strawberry jam will be all you want. Just concentrate on eating
a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, red meats and
poultry, and take a prenatal vitamin. This way, you know your
baby is getting everything it needs nutritionally.
