In 1959 a new product was introduced to the markets by Texas Instruments. This little device measured only 7/16 by 1/16 inches in size, cost $400 to manufacture and was immediately met with skepticism by the technology industry. Yet this was the start of what has turned into a gigantic $115 billion a year industry. The transistor was invented in 1947 by scientists working at AT & T Labs. These electrical switches were a considerable improvement over the vacuum tubes that had been used for the last 40 years. But as much improved as transistors were, they still required being soldered to larger circuit boards. Every single solder then became a potential failure point in the circuitry. In 1958 Jack Kilby joined Texas Instruments. He began by taking a look at what the future of existing electrical equipment held and soon realized there had to be a better way. Investor's Business Daily recently ran an article outlining the key steps to building a strong business. #3 on the list was developing an operating plan, then sticking to it. Mr. Kilby became determined to find a viable solution to this failure problem in the circuitry. To do this he constantly studied the current technology and then listed all possible solutions and ideas. Kilby's idea was to combine transistors, resistors, and capacitors onto a single silicon wafer. The result of his determination and hard work was the very first chip. However the process of building the chip was time consuming and costly. Technology groups came up with one objection after another, but Kilby refused to give up and let his invention die. Using demonstrations and mathematical equations, he was finally able to convince NASA and the U.S. Air Force of the chips potential. After touring the country selling his invention, and coupled with TI's advancements in cost efficiency, the chip was finally accepted by the entire high tech industry. But another challenge was soon given by TI. At the time electronic calculators were bigger than typewriters and cost upwards of $1000. Could Kilby build a cost efficient and small calculator? He went to work and in 1971 the Poketronic Electronic Calculator hit the stores. It was an immediate success, in fact demand became so great that TI found itself producing millions of these inexpensive devices. Jack Kilby was a man who was never satisfied with the way things were. He was always looking for better solutions to known problems. Because of his determination, vision, and willingness to never give up and never take no for an answer, the forerunner of our modern day microchip, the integrated circuit came into existence. Personal computer maker Gateway Inc. may soon be on the sale block. In January, the San Diego based company reported a fourth quarter loss of $94.3 million on revenue of $2,373 billion. Gateway has announced the closing of 27 of it's retail stores in the U.S. and all of it's stores in Canada. The company is still evaluating what to do with it's 45 stores in Asia and 27 in Europe. The word on the street says Dell Computer Corp. is the most likely buyer, although Dell CEO Michael Dell says he is still skeptical about making acquisitions to increase market share. Rumor also has it that Gateway is talking with the large Japanese vendors NEC and Toshiba about a possible partnership. Gateway is the fourth largest PC seller in the U.S.and ranks No. 6 world wide. Micron Electronics has thrown in the towel and announced they will no longer be making PC's. eMachines Inc. and PeoplePC Inc are expected to follow suit. Dell currently holds 21.3% of the U.S. market share, Compaq 14.3%, Hewlett-Packard 12.2%, Gateway 8.4%, IBM 5.9%, eMachines and Apple 2.4%, Acer 2.2%, Toshiba 2%, Sony 1.6%, and Micron 1.3%, all others make up the rest at 26% of market share.
