In a scene from the classic movie, Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker are aboard the Millenium Falcon en route to assist the Galactic Empire.
At the same time another space ship, aptly named the Death Star and controlled by the forces of the evil Emperor; is rapidly approaching it's mission target... the peaceful planet of Alderaan.
As the planet comes within the Death Star's firing range, the command is given. In one split second the terrifying fire power the Death Star possesses completely destroys an entire planet.
Millions upon millions of innocent and harmless citizens on Alderaan suddenly lost their lives to an evil force that cared nothing about the sanctity of a human life.
Alderaan was destroyed merely ...... as a "demonstration" of the Imperial Emperor's power.
Back on the Millenium Falcon, Obi-Wan becomes faint and announces to Luke, "I have felt a great disturbance in the force; as if a million voices suddenly cried out in terror."
From the very first moment a human being was put on this planet Earth, the forces of evil have conspired against and waged war on him and his ancestors.
The continuation of this struggle has flowed throughout our 6,000 years of history like a red thread woven in a white line.
In Star Wars, Obi-Wan constantly reminds young Luke Skywalker that becoming a Jedi Knight is "his destiny."
The human race was put on this planet to fulfill a glorious destiny of their own. A part of this destiny is to eradicate from Earth the forces of evil and to make it a place where all can live in joyous peace and harmony.
Our readers encompass a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and religious beliefs and lifestyles. But no matter what religious belief, every great teacher and prophet have consistently taught the one great theme, "To love one another."
Fighting, killing, the disregard for a human life are far too commonplace, not only today, but all through our history.
Our people are a people of peace and love. That is what is in our hearts. We understand that.
It is beyond our comprehension how the value of a life can mean absolutely nothing to some....to those who would destroy a living creature of beauty merely....."as a demonstration of their power and wickedness."
And so, the question has been asked for centuries, "Why do bad things happen to good people?"
The writer of Ecclesiastes (Chapter 9: 11, 12), says, ".....but time and chance happen to them all. For man does
not know his time. Like fish which are taken in an evil net, and like birds which are caught in a snare, so the sons of
men are snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them."
There is a presence on planet Earth....an evil and wicked presence that does not rightfully belong here. The evil emperor of that power and his forces are the destroyer of life and beauty, of goodness and kindness, of all that stands in love.
God is the giver of all life, the giver of good and beauty, the author of love.
There has been appointed a time when every trace of evil will be completely and utterly eradicated from our planet. Then, there will be a most glorious time of world peace, prosperity, and brotherhood like has never been known.
As sons of men we cry out for that time to rapidly approach and for us to fulfill our destiny.
The people on Alderaan had no way of knowing beforehand their fate that day. Their day began like any other. They were a planet of beings that weren't even armed.
On September 11, 2001 we started our day like any other.
And then, just as Obi-Wan said, we all became faint and felt a great disturbance in the force.
A tremendous amount of attention has been given to what the forces of evil have wrought upon a peace loving people. Attention is what that enemy seeks.
Let us turn our attention away from the destroyer of life and place it upon the One Great Giver of life.
"Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were digged." "Hearken to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law." (Isaiah 51: 1, 7 ).
"Return unto Me, and I will return unto you." (Malachi 3: 7)
And, as John Lennon wrote in his beautiful song, Imagine,
"Imagine there's no country, it isn't hard to do....
Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too....
Imagine all the people.......living a life of peace."
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one....
I hope someday you'll join us.....
and the world will live as one."

A Reader From New York City Tells Us:
Hey Dave,
No, I was not near the WTC - I work in midtown, near St. Patrick's Cathedral. However, my ex-boyfriend was there and left about 6 AM (he's one of the heads of security).
It was a great day of sadness and despair and disbelief. I think the reality still has not set in for me. I look at the skyline and I keep hoping to see the Twin Towers, but knowing in my heart that they are gone for now.....
In light of all that has happened, I know that NYC will once again be the great town it is. Even though we are in the midst of a terrible, horrific tragedy, I know that I can rely on the qualities of the people of New York City: perseverance, persistence, determination, love, compassion, devotion, and great spirit to pull us through this difficult time.
All these things will lead us back to the two things that NYC has always symbolized for me - STRENGTH AND UNITY.
We are strong, and we are united and even though the Twin Towers have fallen, please understand that we are definitely not defeated.
Thanks,
Nica
(Nica is one of our faithful readers who wrote in telling us her story. She exemplifies the spirit of the folks in NYC and the American people.)

If I Only Had A Heart
In the 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz, the Tin Woodsman went to Oz in search of a heart. Had he instead went to Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, he would have found one.
On July 2 of this year, surgeons performed the first ever fully implanted heart replacement into patient, Robert Tools. Thanks to the incredible technology developed by Abimed Inc. he is still alive today.
The unit called AbioCor, is made from titanium and Angioflex, and is fully encased in the chest cavity of the patient.
It's pumping action is controlled by microprocessors and a tiny battery.
Over 700,000 people die every year from heart failure. The advent of the AbioCor is expected to save hundreds of thousands of lives. In fact it may someday become a rarity for a person to die of "traditional" heart failure.
The 7 hour operation cost a cool half million with the AbioCor unit priced at $100,000. But, as the units become mass produced, the price is expected to drop as low as $10,000 for a single unit.
A New Breed Of Sports Card
Topps Co. has acquired sports card trading site thePit.com for $5.7 million. ThePit.com is an online market for trading cards with more than 300,000 visitors every month.
Using thePit.com, Topps plans to launch a new breed of trading cards called etopps. This will be a trading card only available on the Internet. Etopps is due to be launched before the end of the 2001 baseball season.
They Came To Play!
After e-mail, people spend the most time online searching for information and items.
3 years ago, two Stanford University drop-outs started a company on the Internet that is expected to have revenues this year of close to $50 million.
In just that short amount of time, Google has become the 15th most visited Web site in the U.S. It currently handles 120 million searches every day. It has seen a 73% increase in traffic this year alone, now making it the number 1 pure search engine site.
And....they accomplished this feat by spending absolutely zero dollars on marketing.
NPD Group ranked Google the most effective search engine, with 97% of users saying they located what they were looking for "every time" or "most of the time." In short, they offer the best search on the Web.
The company's software now searches more than 1.6 billion web pages and plans to go after the rest of the estimated 5 billion searchable pages claimed to be in existence.
Users can do a search in 66 different languages and plans to have the capacity to search images are in the works.
Rivals Yahoo and CNET have seen ad revenues drop in recent quarters. Ad sales for Google have risen 10% each quarter. Ads seen on Google are text rather than graphical in nature making them extremely easy to edit.
